SUMMARY:Affective Landmarking - An App to Close Read with Your Emotions
DESCRIPTION:Come interact with a tool that turns close reading into a color spectrum. Affective Landmarking is an annotation style where readers highlight passages in a text and tag them with emotional responses\, such as fear\, joy\, etc. Those tags are visualized in real time\, mapping the diverse reading experiences to reflect emotional clusters\, overlaps\, or disappearances across a text.\nThe project was experimented with in a first-year writing classroom at Queens College\, where students read Claudia Rankine’s Citizen and annotated their responses together.\nAL asks: What happens when emotions drive analysis\, and subjective experience is valued\, especially when reading controversial texts? This project treats that data as relational and participatory. Going forward\, this style could open up possibilities for comparative studies across classrooms\, organizations\, and communities\, asking people to read slowly in the age of quickness.\nCome try this process\, engage with the app\, and learn more!\n\nBio: This project was built by Meha Gupta\, a PhD candidate at the CUNY Graduate Center\, where she works at the intersection of digital humanities\, affect theory\, physics\, and race and ethnic studies. She teaches at Baruch College.

SUMMARY:CUNY Tech Prep at NYC PIT Pop Up
DESCRIPTION:Join CUNY Tech Prep and PIT @ CUNY at the NYC PIT Pop Up for a day of demos and conversation!\n \nThree group projects will be demoed\, focusing on promoting public good related to transportation\, recreation\, and finance: \n\n\nHerRide: HerRide is a community-based carpooling platform that helps women travel together more safely and comfortably. The app connects verified women riders and drivers heading in the same direction through real-time route matching and an interactive map interface. Created to address safety concerns around commuting alone\, HerRide offers a more trustworthy and community-oriented alternative to traditional rideshare services. By Rafayet and Damaris\nWeatherorNot: WeatherOrNot is a web-based application developed to provide users with accurate and actionable weather information in order to support informed decision-making for outdoor activities\, particularly sports. The application collects weather data and presents it in a clear interface\, allowing users to quickly determine whether current and forecasted conditions are suitable for outdoor sports. By: Haim\, Joseph\, and Tommy\nWorthwise: WorthWise is a college return on investment (ROI) planning application that helps students make informed decisions about higher education. The platform enables users to compare colleges and programs\, calculate true costs (tuition\, housing\, and living expenses)\, and project financial outcomes based on post-graduation earnings data. Users can analyze ROI\, debt-to-income ratios\, payback periods\, and compare up to four scenarios simultaneously. The application integrates data from trusted government sources\, including the U.S. Department of Education\, HUD\, Bureau of Economic Analysis\, and Energy Information Administration. By: Karina\, Kyame\, and Fardin\n\n\n\nCUNY Tech Prep is a year long technical and professional development program for CUNY computer science and related majors to learn in-demand technologies\, master professional soft skills\, and land great tech jobs in NYC. CTP is supported by CISDD (CUNY Institute for Software Design and Development) and NYC TTP (New York City Tech Talent Pipeline).

SUMMARY:Tech for Safer Cities: Tackling Gender Based Violence for Women & Youth - #NYTechWeek
DESCRIPTION:Sessions: 90 mins each \n11 am to 1230 pm – RSVP here!\n0230 pm to 4 pm – RSVP here!\nOpen engagement: 12:30 – 2:00 pm and 4:00–6:00 PM (meet the teams\, demos\, conversations) \nGender-based violence (GBV) remains one of the most underreported human rights violations globally\, disproportionately affecting women\, youth\, and vulnerable communities who often face barriers to reporting\, limited access to support systems\, and a lack of trust in institutions. \nThis session brings together Red Dot Foundation Global\, Catcalls of NYC\, Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team and If Possible AI\, in collaboration with The NYC PIT Pop Up\, an activation of CUNY Public Interest Technology Lab\, to explore how technology can make invisible harms visible\, amplify survivor voices\, and strengthen public accountability. \nTo make the experience more participatory and hands-on\, the session will be delivered as an immersive solution showcase and rotating demo lab rather than a traditional panel. \nParticipants will explore practical\, community-driven technologies and creative approaches that address gender-based violence\, strengthen civic participation\, improve public decision-making\, and support safer\, more inclusive communities. \nThis event is part of #NYTechWeek – a week of events hosted by VCs and startups bringing together the tech ecosystem. Learn more at www.tech-week.com. \n\nWhat problem are we addressing?\nGBV is pervasive\, but the data needed to prevent it is incomplete\, biased\, or absent\, particularly for immigrant women. \nBarriers include: \n\nFear of authorities and immigration consequences\nLimited digital access and literacy\nCultural stigma and language gaps\n\nAs a result\, cities are often designing safety systems without the participation or data of those most at risk. Most tech solutions optimise for efficiency\, not equity. \nThis creates a persistent gap between lived experience and institutional response. \n\nWhat solution will this session offer?\nWe focus on community-driven\, tech-enabled approaches that close the gap between lived experience and institutional response: \nCitizen-generated data (Safecity) → Identifying patterns and informing policy \nPublic storytelling and visibility (Catcalls of NYC) → Shifting norms and reclaiming space \nOpen-source mapping (Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team) → Enabling inclusive\, geospatial decision-making \nAI-powered advocacy and fundraising (If Possible AI) → Democratising access to funding \n\n\nFormat (90 minutes\, interactive)\n\nWe will present 4 case studies and have an interactive segment for participants to share their perspectives through a Collective Reflection Wall. We seek inputs on: How can citizen-generated data improve public decision-making? What makes technology inclusive and trustworthy for immigrant and marginalised communities? How can data\, storytelling\, and mapping work together to create safer cities? What would it take to scale these solutions in your community? The responses will be synthesised into a practical framework for designing ethical\, inclusive public interest technology.\n\nSpeakers\n\nGillian D’Souza Nazareth – Treasurer\, Red Dot Foundation Global\nSophie Sandberg – Catcalls of NYC; Chalk Back\n\nColleen Cook – If Possible AI\n\nDK Benjamin – Senior Tech Lead Humanitarian\, OpenStreetMap\n\n\nOpen Engagement (12:30-2:00 PM and 4:00–6:00 PM)\nAn informal space to: \n\nExperience live demos (Safecity\, Mobile Pathways\, mapping tools)\nExplore collaboration opportunities\nEngage directly with practitioners working at the intersection of tech\, gender\, and migration

SUMMARY:Sonic Spaces: Frequency Allocations - Angel Nevarez & Valerie Tevere
DESCRIPTION:Part of NYC PIT Pop-Up’s inaugural Sonic Spaces series exploring the intersection of sound/music with public interest technology. \nOn Friday April 24th\, artists Angel Nevarez and Valerie Tevere will host a day-length audio installation at the pop up that will capture and recontextualize radio frequencies from areas inside and immediately surrounding the Oculus. The local airwaves will be sourced and recombined into a sound piece exploring the overlapping textures communicated across Lower Manhattan re-articulating the invisible and omnipresent frequencies used by municipal agencies. Angel Nevarez and Valerie Tevere are interdisciplinary artists whose practice spans over twenty years of projects that actuate music and sound\, radio\, dissent\, and the cultural complexities of the public sphere. The artists have produced works in video installation\, lyric writing\, performance\, and photography. Their research interests lie in the intersection between music\, civic action\, and historical moments that resonate through distinct musical instrumentation and sonorous traditions. \nThis installation will be freely accessible to visitors at the pop up from 12pm-6pm throughout the day\, no RSVP necessary.

SUMMARY:Sonic Spaces: Liz Pelly "Mood Machine" book discussion
DESCRIPTION:Part of NYC PIT Pop-Up’s inaugural Sonic Spaces series exploring the intersection of sound/music with public interest technology. \nOn Wednesday April 22nd\, author Liz Pelly will be joined by moderator Jeff Tobias to discuss her recent book Mood Machine\, which takes a critical look at the rise of Spotify\, the data surveillance company masquerading as a music streaming platform. Drawing on over one hundred interviews with industry insiders\, former Spotify employees\, and musicians\, Mood Machine takes us to the inner workings of today’s highly consolidated record business\, showing what has changed as music has become increasingly playlisted\, personalized\, and autoplayed. \nThe event will allow for a limited in-person capacity and will be livestreamed. SUMMARY:Sonic Spaces: Todd Craig “K for the Way” audiobook launch
DESCRIPTION:Part of NYC PIT Pop-Up’s inaugural Sonic Spaces series exploring the intersection of sound/music with public interest technology. \nOn Monday April 20th at 6pm\, writer/educator/DJ Todd Craig will be in dialogue with Chenjerai Kumanyika to celebrate the audiobook release of his recent book K for the Way. Craig’s book establishes and investigates the function of DJ rhetoric and literacy\, illuminating the DJ as a fruitful example for (re)envisioning approaches to writing\, research\, and analysis in contemporary educational settings. Because it is widely recognized that the DJ was the catalyst for the creation of Hip Hop culture\, this book begins a new conversation in which Hip Hop DJs introduce ideas about poetics and language formation through the modes\, practices\, and techniques they engage in on a daily basis. \nThe event will allow for a limited in-person capacity and will be livestreamed. SUMMARY:Sonic Spaces: Sounds of the Earth performance & discussion
DESCRIPTION:Part of NYC PIT Pop-Up’s inaugural Sonic Spaces series exploring the intersection of sound/music with public interest technology. \nSounds of Earth is a live performance and public conversation that reimagines the archive as a collective “sound ark.” Inspired by NASA’s 1977 Golden Record\, the project reflects on how voices\, music\, and media technologies serve as vessels of preservation. \nThe evening features a transatlantic experiment: from Berlin\, opera singer Lola Volonakis performs live in dialogue with her AI double in New York. Using high-resolution vocal modeling\, the AI reinterprets fragments of Mozart’s The Magic Flute (one of the musical selections NASA sent to represent humanity in 1977)\, challenging notions of authorship\, replication\, and cultural heritage. \nThe performance will be immediately followed by a public conversation on media preservation and public interest technology featuring Lola Volonakis\, Camille Jeanjean (Villa Albertine)\, and Aurelie Barbier (Space to the People). \nSounds of Earth is part of Space to the People’s ongoing exploration of “space arks” and who decides what is worth carrying forward. It builds on our collaborative project Worlds We Carry\, previously presented at the NYC PIT Pop Up\, extending this inquiry from visual archives to sound and voices. \n The event will allow for a limited in-person capacity and will be livestreamed. RSVP here to attend.

SUMMARY:Gamifying Know-Your-Rights Information (Open Data Week)
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Ray Brescia (Albany Law School) \nThis presentation will explore the power of gamification and then describe one current work in progress\, an online game\, “Haunted Housing\,” that is designed in partnership with community-based advocacy organizations in New York City to educate youth\, particularly from immigrant communities\, about housing rights.  Gamification can be utilized in many other contexts–from immigrants’ rights to school discipline–and I will describe our ground-up method for developing this tool and encourage others to explore similar initiatives in other contexts. \nBio: Professor Brescia combines his experience as a public interest attorney in New York City with his scholarly interests to address economic and social inequality\, the legal and policy implications of financial crises\, how innovative legal and regulatory approaches can improve economic and community development efforts\, and the need to expand access to justice for people of low and moderate income.  He is the author of “The Future of Change: How Technology Shapes Social Revolutions” (Cornell University Press\, 2020)\, which examines the intersection of technology and social movements\, from the American Revolution\, to the present day.  His forthcoming work\, “Lawyer Nation: The Past\, Present\, and Future of the American Legal Profession\,” due out in late 2023\, will be published by New York University Press.

SUMMARY:DuBois Does Data (Open Data Week)
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Mike Spade (The Knowledge House) \n35 years after slavery\, Du Bois set out to provide a definitive image of the Negro condition in the United States. His data efforts not only quantified economic parity or lack thereof\, he also focused on where people lived\, and how they lived. During the 1900 Paris Exposition\, he shared his findings with the world. But how do those findings hold up 125 years later? What has changed? Has anything stayed the same? At Du Bois Does Data\, engage with his visuals\, portraits\, and data in a multi-sensory experience. Scents derived from the life and experience of W.E.B. Playlists charting the course of Black American music from his birth to his death\, a day before the “I Have A Dream Speech.” Books celebrating his work and a first edition copy of his completed passion project\, Africana. Curated vintage stamps in his image\, portraits\, and his article in Africana will serve as activations for A/R experiences\, bringing the nostalgia into the palm of your hand. In Du Bois Does Data\, we also used Python to evaluate the condition of Black Americans 125 years after his exhibit using Census data in 6 Jupyter Notebooks. \nBio: Mike Spade is a Learning Strategist focused on bridging the gap between historical scholarship and immersive technology. With a background in instructional design and a passion for data storytelling\, this latest project represents the intersection of education\, history\, and emerging tech. Over the past few years\, the Queens native has split time working for The Knowledge House and studying with the Community Sensor Lab at the Advanced Science Research Center in Harlem. He is currently showcasing Du Bois Does Data\, the first first offering from the Radical Imagination Cultural Technology Studio.

SUMMARY:Black Knowledge Erasure Dataset
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Sasha Richardson (CUNY Graduate Center) \nThe Black Knowledge Erasure Dataset (BKED) is a research archive designed to document how AI models like GPT-5 and Gemini distort Black history and culture through specific “hallucinations”. Rather than viewing these errors as random bugs\, the project frames them as “epistemic erasure\,” where algorithms invent authorities or omit key figures in ways that mirror historical discrimination. The dataset includes the original prompts\, the incorrect AI responses\, and human-verified annotations that identify exactly where the models failed against standard archival sources. \nBio: Sasha Richardson works at the intersection of data science\, AI\, and the humanities to design tools and systems that turn complex information into actionable insights. Currently pursuing an MA in Digital Humanities at the CUNY Graduate Center\, she is exploring how advanced analytics and AI can address equity\, resource allocation\, and decision-making challenges.

SUMMARY:The Cloud is a Place in Brooklyn (Open Data Week)
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Zoe Voss Lee (MIT) \nIn this speculative design workshop\, we ask: What if our data infrastructure lived in our neighborhood parks\, schools\, or community gardens? What if a data center didn’t just store files\, but also used its excess heat to warm a public pool in the winter? What if your neighborhood’s digital history was stored in a “Community Memory Bank” that you helped manage? What if data infrastructure was owned by communities and served community needs? \nBio: Zoe Voss Lee is an urbanist building tools that shift power toward communities by collectivizing efforts for environmental and economic justice. Currently seeking conversations with people building community power through decentralized energy and data infrastructure in New York City!
