SUMMARY:Du Bois Does Data: Juneteenth at the Oculus — Presented by Radical Imagination (Day Three)
DESCRIPTION:This is part of a three-day weekend of presentations from Radical Imagination celebrating Juneteenth by exploring the legacy of W.E.B. DuBois. \n35 years after slavery\, Du Bois set out to provide a definitive image of the Negro condition in the United States. His data efforts not only quantified economic parity or lack thereof\, he also focused on where people lived\, and how they lived. During the 1900 Paris Exposition\, he shared his findings with the world. But how do those findings hold up 125 years later? What has changed? Has anything stayed the same? At Du Bois Does Data\, engage with his visuals\, portraits\, and data in a multi-sensory experience. Scents derived from the life and experience of W.E.B. Playlists charting the course of Black American music from his birth to his death\, a day before the “I Have A Dream Speech.” Books celebrating his work and a first edition copy of his completed passion project\, Africana. Curated vintage stamps in his image\, portraits\, and his article in Africana will serve as activations for A/R experiences\, bringing the nostalgia into the palm of your hand. In Du Bois Does Data\, we also used Python to evaluate the condition of Black Americans 125 years after his exhibit using Census data in 6 Jupyter Notebooks. \nBio: Mike Spade (Radical Imagination) is a Learning Strategist focused on bridging the gap between historical scholarship and immersive technology. With a background in instructional design and a passion for data storytelling\, this latest project represents the intersection of education\, history\, and emerging tech. Over the past few years\, the Queens native has split time working for The Knowledge House and studying with the Community Sensor Lab at the Advanced Science Research Center in Harlem. He is currently showcasing Du Bois Does Data\, the first offering from the Radical Imagination Cultural Technology Studio.

DESCRIPTION:The CUNY AI Lab (CAIL) is a faculty- and staff-led initiative based at the Graduate Center that supports experimentation with AI by teachers and researchers across disciplines. Funded by the Office of Academic Affairs and jointly administered by Graduate Center Digital Initiatives\, the Teaching and Learning Center\, the Mina Rees Library\, and the American Social History Project\, the Lab builds infrastructure aligned with the university’s public-serving mission. Our experimental tools frame generative AI as a set of techniques that can be prototyped\, evaluated\, and iteratively developed\, with user agency and explicit retention policies at the center of our approach to critical making and public advocacy. \nDuring our demo at NYC PIT Pop Up\, visitors will be encouraged to explore Agent Studio (a tool that facilitates research workflows for data exploration and visualization)\, Site Studio (a tool to build websites through conversation)\, and our dedicated sandbox environment (via Open WebUI) for general experimentation. We will also showcase media processing tools for image description\, audio transcription\, and optical character recognition. Lastly\, visitors will be able to try our game-based applications\, which include Cloze Reader (an AI-enabled reading game featuring Project Gutenberg texts)\, JeopardyLM (a customizable game-based learning tool)\, and a prototype where visitors can prompt AI models to play games and evaluate their performance in real time.

Many eligible people never apply\, while human service organizations spend enormous time trying to interpret complicated eligibility rules. \nOur tool translates these rules into an interactive chatbot-style screening experience that helps people understand eligibility pathways and prepare for applications. At the Pop Up\, we will demo the screener and invite participants to test it themselves. We’re especially interested in feedback from technologists about usability\, transparency\, and how AI tools can responsibly support public benefits navigation. \nWe’re excited to include this project because access to benefits is a fundamental part of how people experience government. If public systems are confusing or inaccessible\, trust erodes. We believe public interest technology should help translate bureaucratic systems into tools that actually work for people.

SUMMARY:How Safe Is Your Bike Ride? Using Open Data to Find Better Routes
DESCRIPTION:Urban planning researcher Peter Furth developed a framework called Level of Traffic Stress (LTS) to measure how stressful streets are for cyclists. Using street data from OpenStreetMap\, Tajairi Brown-Neuson applied this framework to rate every street in NYC on a scale of 1–4\, based on characteristics like speed limits\, number of lanes\, and presence of protected bike lanes (1 being most comfortable\, 4 being least). They then layered in data from Open Data NYC: fatal and severe injury incidents\, plus 311 complaints to identify areas with high double-parking frequency. The result is a map that helps cyclists identify the safest routes—and highlights where infrastructure improvements are most needed.

City Lens closes that gap. \nThe platform lets users explore neighborhoods\, understand zoning and development\, ask questions about policies\, and see how changes like gentrification\, infrastructure projects\, or permits affect their communities. It combines data storytelling with an AI-powered interface so users can ask real questions in plain language and get clear answers. \nI am excited to include City Lens as a Public Interest Technology project because it focuses on accessibility\, transparency\, and empowerment. It is not just about data\, it is about helping people understand what is happening around them and feel confident engaging with their city. Long term\, I want this to become a tool communities\, students\, and organizers can use to make informed decisions and advocate for change. Showing in real time what translating datasets into visualization for the public looks like.
