Campers will discover how words get chopped into tokens\, how sentences can become 3D shapes\, and how AI maps language in strange hidden spaces. Through hands-on experiments with point clouds\, embeddings\, and 3D printing\, we’ll turn prompts into objects and then ask the big campfire questions: What does AI actually understand? What does it totally miss? DESCRIPTION:As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary\, what does it mean to build technology worthy of the Constitution? \nJoin Beneficial Computing (501c3) a Robin Hood Foundation incubated civic tech nonprofit for a series of live presentations and demonstrations exploring how civic technology can strengthen the relationship between people\, nonprofit organizations\, and public institutions. Through projects spanning community data\, public health\, participatory user research\, accessibility\, UX design\, and AI-powered policy tools\, students and staff will explore how technology can make government more understandable\, accessible\, and usable. \nThe showcase concludes with a live demonstration of Beneficial Computing’s rules-as-code platform showing how complex public policies can be translated into transparent\, human-centered digital tools. DESCRIPTION:Cycling is one of the most sustainable ways to move through a city. More riders means safer streets and a healthier city for everyone. But for cycling to be accessible\, it has to be safe. \nUsing Level of Traffic Stress (LTS)\, a framework developed by urban planning researcher Peter Furth\, Our Phalt rates every street in NYC on a scale from 1 to 4 based on speed limits\, number of lanes\, and the presence or type of cycling infrastructure. Layered with NYC collision data and other public datasets\, the project helps cyclists identify safer routes and highlights where infrastructure improvements are needed most. \nOur Phalt is as much a map as it is a journalistic endeavor: a way to visualize the city’s cycling infrastructure gaps and shift the conversation around street safety.

We would love to see work from across the CUNY community represented—including graduate and master’s students\, faculty\, research teams and labs\, centers and institutes\, programs\, and initiatives. \nThe Expo is designed as an informal\, public-facing showcase of climate-related work. This might include a research project or body of work\, lab or research group\, center or institute\, ongoing initiative\, dataset\, map or visualization\, tool\, technology\, demonstration\, or another form of climate-related work you would like to share with a broader audience. In advance of this event\, a shortlist of nine finalists will present their projects with the public at NYC PIT Pop Up during Climate Week 2026! \n\n\nOverall it appears that congestion pricing has been a success for NYC\, but that story is more complicated and nuanced. While there has been a 22% drop in air pollution\, this is a peak hour measurement and not a daily one. There has not been a daily change\, suggesting a shift in pollution — not an elimination. Taking a closer look across the boroughs\, The South Bronx is reporting a rise in particulate matter polluting the air. It’s possible that this is due to diverting traffic looking to avoid the congestion relief zone. \n\n\n\nThe datathon participants will be presenting mapping models that begin to tell the overall traffic migration story and show how optimistic the impacts that congestion pricing has had on the city in terms of air quality truly is. These maps will factor in air quality\, traffic and congestion pricing data. \n  \nTo help us kick off this three-day series\, we’ll be joined by the team from OpenPlans.org\, who will be sharing their work to promote a people-first street culture that prioritizes community\, active mobility\, and connection.

A few of those tools continue to be built. \n​We’re hosting another hackathon (improved with your feedback!) for civic technologists\, government practitioners\, researchers\, advocates\, and anyone who wants to build tools that help government deliver. \n​The theme for this hackathon is Public Engagement: \n\n\n​Community Board (CB) Operations — CBs want tools that help them run more efficiently and make decisions faster. Build a Meeting Assistant agent to support parliamentary procedure and resolution writing. Create a Knowledge Base chatbot to speed up new member onboarding. Build a Tracker that connects resolutions to relevant agencies and follows outcomes. \n\n\n​Public Voice At Scale — Governments receive an incredible amount of feedback. They need tools that facilitate inclusive\, equitable\, and effective democratic participation. What 311 complaint patterns can you identify – and how might you highlight voices missing from the data? What problems might be solved by leveraging social media and other unstructured feedback channels?
