SUMMARY:Climate Week: Macaulay Honors Fall Datathon Showcase (Day Three)
DESCRIPTION:Macaulay Honors College Presents: Reimagining New York City! September 24-26 \n\nThis fall\, Macaulay Honors College will be hosting the culminating event of its annual Datathon in collaboration with Marcy Labs. This competitive event has attracted more than 300 students from across CUNY to tackle the real-world challenge of how to understand air pollution using the tools of data science\, data integrity\, and data storytelling. In advance of this event\, a shortlist of nine finalists will present their projects with the public at NYC PIT Pop Up during Climate Week 2026! \n\n\nOverall it appears that congestion pricing has been a success for NYC\, but that story is more complicated and nuanced. While there has been a 22% drop in air pollution\, this is a peak hour measurement and not a daily one. There has not been a daily change\, suggesting a shift in pollution — not an elimination. Taking a closer look across the boroughs\, The South Bronx is reporting a rise in particulate matter polluting the air. It’s possible that this is due to diverting traffic looking to avoid the congestion relief zone. \n\n\n\nThe datathon participants will be presenting mapping models that begin to tell the overall traffic migration story and show how optimistic the impacts that congestion pricing has had on the city in terms of air quality truly is. These maps will factor in air quality\, traffic and congestion pricing data.

RSVP here.* \nWant to use technology to improve how government works? \n​In June\, 80 people used AI to prototype 20 tools that can transform how government delivers services. A few of those tools continue to be built. \n​We’re hosting another hackathon (improved with your feedback!) for civic technologists\, government practitioners\, researchers\, advocates\, and anyone who wants to build tools that help government deliver. \n​The theme for this hackathon is Public Engagement: \n\n\n​Community Board (CB) Operations — CBs want tools that help them run more efficiently and make decisions faster. Build a Meeting Assistant agent to support parliamentary procedure and resolution writing. Create a Knowledge Base chatbot to speed up new member onboarding. Build a Tracker that connects resolutions to relevant agencies and follows outcomes. \n\n\n​Public Voice At Scale — Governments receive an incredible amount of feedback. They need tools that facilitate inclusive\, equitable\, and effective democratic participation. What 311 complaint patterns can you identify – and how might you highlight voices missing from the data? What problems might be solved by leveraging social media and other unstructured feedback channels? How can AI and tech help agencies seek out and digest input from historically underserved and underheard constituents? \n\n\n​Judge Specials — Hear what’s been frustrating our Judges day-of and meet the moment by building solutions to their problems! \n\n\n​Brought to you by the State Capacity Ecosystem team\, Civic Roundtable\, and the CUNY Public Interest Technology (PIT) Lab with the simple goal of forcing collisions between government and technology. \n​Thank you to Judges Raj Korpan\, Jeremy Ney\, and Sara Lind!
